Well Woman Exam Q & A

What is a well-woman exam?

Nexplanon Logo

Well-woman exams are annual women’s health checkups that include physical exams, evaluations, and diagnostic testing and treatment when necessary. At East Texas Family Care, Mrs. Edwards may order annual mammograms, as well as other tests to check for your overall health.

Mrs. Edwards is highly trained in women’s health and can detect and treat common problems before they become serious.

What happens during well-woman exams?

During well-woman exams, you can expect a few things, including:

Vital signs check

The vital signs check portion of a women’s wellness checkup includes an assessment of your blood pressure, pulse, and other vital signs. Mrs. Edwards also weighs you and determines your body mass index (BMI).

Medical history review

Mrs. Edwards reviews your medical history by asking a series of questions about your symptoms, past diagnoses, medications, and lifestyle habits.

Physical exam

During a physical exam, she may recommend a breast exam or pelvic exam, to assess your overall health. She evaluates your eyes, ears, throat, heartbeat, and breathing. Mrs. Edwards offers a Pap test to screen for cervical cancer if you’re at risk of developing it.

Diagnostic testing

Mrs. Edwards may order additional diagnostic testing if she needs more information about your health condition, including blood tests, urine screenings, pelvic ultrasounds, and heart-function testing. When necessary, she orders mammograms to screen for breast cancer. She may also complete a psychiatric evaluation to check for depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders.

Special treatments and referrals

If you need treatment for a special women’s health problem, East Texas Family Care has the solutions you’re seeking. Mrs. Edwards offers medication prescriptions, birth control, vaccinations, and specialist referrals if you have signs of cancer or another complex gynecological problem.

When should I schedule well-woman exams?

Unless you’re instructed to schedule well-woman exams more often, it’s important to schedule a well-woman exam every year. If you notice new or unusual symptoms, such as abnormal menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, or a lump in your breast tissue, you should also reach out to East Texas Family Care for help managing these symptoms.

Any time you have concerns about your overall health, symptoms, or medication regimen, Mrs. Edwards will be happy to assist you. She also offers virtual telehealth follow-up visits (you can discuss with her your concerns from the comfort of your home).
